Science Awareness Dates in 2024 for schools

What are science awareness days?

Science awareness days are national or international dates that celebrate or bring attention to a cause or topic. In addition to days, there are awareness weeks and months too! From World Wildlife Day in March, to International Women in Engineering Day in June, there are so many events to get involved with during the school year.

This blog post gives suggestions for how your school could get involved in a science awareness day. You can also download a free calendar of useful science dates for 2024 to help with your planning.

Benefits of getting involved with science awareness days

  • Ready-made resources

Many awareness dates have a dedicated website with free downloadable resources for schools. There may also be videos to watch or online events to tune into.

  • Opportunities for grant funding

In advance of an awareness day, some organizations offer grants for schools to run projects with their students. Look out for these opportunities on social media, or on the organization’s website.

  • Competitions or projects

Some awareness days may have school competitions or citizen science projects your students can get involved with.

  • Real world links to children’s learning

Science awareness days give children the opportunity to see how science is used outside of the classroom, and help them think about future careers.

  • Access to experts

Keep an eye out for opportunities for children to quiz experts and scientists (e.g. through social media hashtags).

A wider awareness

There are other dates throughout the year where links to science can be made. For Women’s History Month your students can find out more about pioneering female scientists such as Mary Anning or Marie Curie. Black History Month, and Pride Month are also great opportunities to celebrate scientists of different backgrounds.

Be selective and plan ahead

You don’t need to get involved in everything. Pay particular attention to your own curriculum and look for awareness days that will enhance children’s learning and link to their learning for the year.

    1. I haven’t but most of the days will be similar to those for Sept-Dec 23, so you can use that as a starting point 🙂
