Mini-microscope for exploring the world up close

These mini microscopes will have children enthralled. Use them to explore leaves, bugs, feathers, shells, coins, fingerprints and more!

There are lots of different models to choose from in different price brackets. Some models can be used as stand-alone, whilst others connect to a phone or laptop. Mini microscopes are straightforward to operate but my experience has been that children aged 7 and over get the most out of them.

A nature book to treasure

This is a book that will be treasured for years to come? The DK Treasures series of hardback books are exquisite! The title that particularly caught my eye was Nature’s Treasures: Tales Of More Than 100 Extraordinary Objects From Nature. Perhaps it’s the former museum educator in me but I love the idea of a curated book of natural objects. Inquisitive kids can explore shed snake skin, dragonfly wings, animal teeth, fossils, nests, and more. Perfect for curious minds.

Fossil dig from National Geographic

Ok with this one, the actual activity might be over pretty quickly. But afterward, children are left with 15 real fossils to keep and treasure. Fossils include teeth, shells, coral, and even a coprolite (poop!). Mini-palaeontologists will love ‘digging up’ the little fossils with the chisel, then cleaning them with the included brush.

A full-color guide and magnifying glass are also included for identification.

Bug Bingo family fun

I took this Bug Bingo game to a family weekend away and the children (of different ages) were hooked! Everyone gets a board, and the caller picks out bug pictures from a cloth bag. The bugs are not ordinary creepy-crawlies – there are some amazing creatures featured including the giant jungle nymph and vampire moth.

It’s a great activity for encouraging observational skills whilst having a ton of fun. There are also versions with cats, dinosaurs, ocean creatures, birds, endangered animals, and dogs.

Explore outdoors with a nature scavenger hunt

This pocket-sized gift is ideal as a stocking filler and can be used all year round. GoFindIt is a sensory nature scavenger hunt activity – a great way to explore the outdoors during every season. You can play it with one person, or with up to 6!

Best of all, the game was developed by a charity called The Sensory Trust, with children involved during all stages of the product development. I love this!
